Herb Higginbottom is the passionate founder and curator of the Deep Creek Tool Museum in Deep Creek, British Columbia, and is a prime example of how a strong business plan, dedication, and community support can turn a personal hobby into a public treasure. Herb’s entrepreneurial journey has built one of the most unique museums in the Shuswap region.

In 2002, Herb enrolled in the Community Futures Shuswap Self-Employment Program, which provides business plan development training to eligible unemployed clients to start their own small business. Using the tools, knowledge and experience he gained from the program, Herb turned his passion for antique tools and machinery into a public attraction providing visitors with an unforgettable insight into the past with his engaging storytelling, creating a hands-on, interactive experience that showcases the evolution of time and technology.
Inspired by a suggestion from his wife, Herb took a bold step to attract more visitors to the museum by building something truly remarkable: an impressive 4,000 - pound manual reel-type lawnmower roadside attraction, drawing curiosity from locals and tourists alike.
The museum is open year-round to welcome the curious to take a step back in time. Whether you are an antique enthusiast or just looking for a memorable stop, the Deep Creek Tool Museum is a must-see tourism destination.
Herb’s advice to others who are starting a business: do your research and develop a comprehensive business plan!
